Why making primary source data about Ukraine matters

Russia's imperialist war put a global spotlight on Ukraine. Current technology also made it one of the most transparent and data-rich wars. Ukraine's society is evolving and rethinking itself. You can learn about it from Ukrainians themselves.

Hundreds of people around the world gather and classify thousands of data points about Russia’s war. Ukraine’s military and society are also very transparent, publicly sharing a lot of data points. Russia is much more locked up, but even it shares data that might hint at trends.

Visua.no aims to gather, structure, and make data on Ukraine from quality data sources easily available for researchers and media. Every chart in the project is built to be auto-updated as often as the data source allows. The sources and data flow are thoroughly documented.

Reliable data gives a clearer and broader view of trends in the war and society. It also helps to avoid propaganda influence. In the end, quality research and reporting are in the best interest of Ukraine.

The project is developed and maintained by Pavlo Krasnomovets in Oslo, Norway (with the help of Claude Code). He has been working as a journalist in Ukraine for 10 years, most recently as an editor covering technology business at Forbes Ukraine.

In Norway, Krasnomovets spent one year covering the Russian war in Ukraine at Aftenposten and developing a prototype for data fetching and visualization of some charts and data sources you see on Visua.no. The project was nominated by Aftenposten for DATA SKUP and received grant support from Fritt Ord Foundation.

Since 2025, Krasnomovets has worked as an assistant researcher at the Program for Ukraine and Full-Spectrum Threats at the Institute for Defence Studies of the Norwegian Defence University College.
